St. Columba’s Abbey on Iona

Please click here to learn about the abbey. The church is still used by the Iona Community for an ecumenical service each Sunday. Marilyn looked through the prayer book used in the service and found it to be similar to Episcopal, Methodist and others but it was apparently written by the community. When we asked about the service we were told they take on the ”flavor” of the one conducting – sometimes protestant, sometimes Catholic, etc.

Looking down from the Hill of the Abbot.
Street of the Dead.
If you enlarge this you will see the beautiful carvings which were originally, apparently, brightly colored.
These slabs were from warriors’ graves. Some of them were carved in stone brought from Loch Sween!
It was quite an undertaking for the Iona Community to raise the money and restore the church.
