In the first picture below you will see the valley somewhere near where we crossed the continental divide today in the San Juan Mountains on our way to Pagosa Springs. We took a little detour to Chimney Rock National Monument. It is not hard to figure how they came up with that name. The sky was fast changing (as it often is out here) and I couldn’t help but think what it must have been like for the Native Americans living up on that ridge more than 1000 years ago when the sky would get dark and threatening. Use this link to learn more about Chimney Rock and what it probably meant to early Americans.
